There are few races in the world that can be considered truly legendary. Some names come to mind: The F1 Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500, the 24 hours of Le Mans, Pikes Peak and, no without doubt, the Isle of Man TT as well. The motorcycle enthusiasts will know what we are talking about. For those who don’t, just watch the following video:
After these images, is it really necessary to say anything else?
The International Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (almost always shortened to TT) is a motorcycle road race held in the public roads of the Isle of Man where riders compete against the clock. This race was first held in 1907 and this year will mark its 93rd edition.
The Isle of Man TT, as the race is commonly known, is considered one of the most dangerous races in the world. This is not an understatement as the track (Mountain Course), more than 37 miles long and with more than 200 corners, is extremely difficult to master. What is more, as usual with open road races, the track has no run-off areas, has uneven tarmac with strips of slippery paint (zebra crossings and the like) and has pilots racing very close to street lights, road signs, trees, fences and many other kinds of potentially deadly objects should an accident happen. Everything to provide the ultimate motorcycle show. But a very dangerous show indeed. Many pilots, some of them great champions like David Jefferies (9 times winner of the Isle of Man TT), have lost their life while racing here.
The roads that make up the Mountain Course where the TT is held have seen motoring legends race and win here. Names like Giacomo Agostini (10 times TT winner), Phil Read (8 times TT winner), Mike Hailwood (14 times TT winner), John McGuinness (19 times TT winner) and TT myth Joey Dunlop (a record 26 times TT winner, seen in the 1990 edition of the TT in the image on the right) are but a few of the famous names that can be found among the winners of this race.
